Umbilical cord prolapse is an obstetric emergency that can lead to brain damage and perinatal death. Perinatal asphyxia is an interruption of blood flow and gas exchange to the fetus associated with a perinatal event such as umbilical cord prolapse. The direct consequence is hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
Case presentation: This is a full-term newborn, who during labor was diagnosed with umbilical cord prolapse, presenting at birth an absence of muscle tone and respiratory effort, he was given advanced resuscitation maneuvers. The baby presented epileptiform activity treated with anticonvulsants and timely management with therapeutic cooling as well as neuroprotective measures resulting in a torpid evolution. Timely diagnosis and multisystemic treatment in patients with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy are the main objective to improve the survival prognosis of moderate to severe stage.
