Late-onset neonatal sepsis caused by Candida lusitaniae

Fungal infections have become an increasingly common problem in neonatal therapies. This is a clinical case of a newborn preterm male of 28.6 weeks of gestation, treated at the Intensive Neonatal Care Service at Hospital Ángeles Lomas, who at the 7th day of birth started with apnea, signs of respiratory distress and abdominal distension, being treated as sepsis with a blood culture report positive for Candida lusitaniae, a rare pathogen with great resistance to antifungal treatment. The aim of this article is to describe the clinical picture, the studies carried out that helped to get the diagnosis and the treatment given. Concluding in our case that despite no report of resistance in the susceptibility methods, it is important to closely monitor the patient and in case of not showing clinical improvement, change the antifungal.
