Abstract

Hip and knee replacement surgery is the method of treatment for those patients with the diagnosis of osteoarthrosis in which the conservative management has failed and continue with functional decline with persistent pain and dependance in the daily activities. The objective of a multimode rehabilitation program in hip or knee replacement surgery is education, rehabilitation management before the surgery, physical and occupational therapy in the immediate and mediate post-surgical moments in order to reduce anxiety, post-operative pain and increase functionality. In the American British Cowdray Hospital a multimode rehabilitation program was created based on international rehabilitation guidelines and taking into consideration the patients’ needs. This rehabilitation program is the result of a multidisciplinary collaboration between medical physicians, physical and occupational therapists and nurses who has the objective to standardize treatment, increase clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction and patients’ safety at the same time to reduce length of hospital stay.
