Abstract

Background: Assessment of left atrial strain has been postulated as an indirect marker for cardiovascular risk stratification in the early stages of disease, facilitating early intervention, treatment and follow-up. Objective: To correlate left atrial strain in patients with cardiovascular risk factors. Material and methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study. Transthoracic echocardiography was performed to determine left atrial reservoir, pump and contraction curves and to correlate them with cardiovascular risk factors. Shapiro-Wilk and χ2 tests were used. Results: 100 patients were included. Patients with arterial hypertension had a mean reservoir strain of 22.63 (± 11.06), patients with type II diabetes had a mean pump strain of 10.01 (± 4.6) and patients with atrial arrhythmias had a mean conduit strain of 7.64 (± 4.60). Atrial arrhythmias for reservoir strain (p = 0.033), arterial hypertension for pump strain (p = 0.019) and hypertriglyceridemia (p = 0.047) are factors associated with reduced phasic deformation. Conclusions: The reduction in atrial strain represents a complex clinical scenario and reflects a high risk for the development of cardiovascular events.
