Background: Hypertension is the leading modifiable cardiovascular risk factor with an impact on morbidity and mortality. The Comprehensive Care Protocol (PAI) standardizes its prevention, diagnosis, and treatment through a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach aimed at preventing cardiovascular complications. Objective: To analyze the control of hypertension using the therapeutic algorithm of the Comprehensive Care Protocol. Material and methods: An observational, descriptive study was conducted in a Family Medicine Unit in Puebla, Mexico, involving patients over 18 years of age of both sexes diagnosed with hypertension and undergoing active treatment; pregnant and lactating women were excluded. Adherence to the algorithm and hypertension control were assessed by reviewing medical records. Fisher’s exact test was used to evaluate the association between adherence and hypertension control; p < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: 219 patients with hypertension, predominantly female (63.9%); high prevalence of obesity (20.1%), diabetes (13.2%), or both (16%). Hypertension control reached 89%; 83.1% with adherence and 16.9% without adherence. Adherence to the algorithm was significantly associated with hypertension control (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Adherence to the therapeutic algorithm of the comprehensive care protocol for hypertension is significantly associated with adequate blood pressure control.
